For whom the bell tolls

Posted on July 2, 2025October 3, 2026 By Sam Wise

2nd July

Health update No. 3

Yes it’s me again. Subject to what does, doesn’t, may do or may not happen following my 9th July phone, face to face, video or telephone appointment/non-appointment, I have a date with Mr Haq (the surgeon with a firm handshake) and his scalpel on Thursday 17th July. If I find out anything more of interest I will provide update(s) as and when.

11th July

Health update No. 4

Hello, I’m still here. Here is my latest health update that no one needed. Hopefully it will be my last update (obviously not as in final ever!). As I am well aware, everyone had been waiting with bated breath to find out the outcome of my 9th July phone, face to face, video or telephone appointment/non-appointment. The result is in and it was rather a damp squib. There was no phone, face to face, video or telephone appointment. It was a non-appointment.

As an aside, I was called by my liver surgeon this morning as the laboratory did not do my liver and renal function blood tests following Tuesday’s monthly blood letting at his clinic. He asked if I could get my GP to get the tests done urgently. I had a little laugh at the thought of my GP surgery doing anything quickly and mentioned it may be quicker if I had the tests done on Tuesday when I am next at King’s. I have now spoken to my GP surgery and the earliest blood test available is the 8th August.

Moving onwards, it was a very busy morning in my bathroom today. As my phone call with my liver surgeon ended and before I had time to put my phone down and reach for my electric toothbrush my phone rang again. This time it was my King’s colorectal team. As my last CT scan was 3 months and 1 day ago they needed me to have another one before my operation as they need to have had results from a CT scan done 3 months or less prior to my operation. I am, of course, very grateful for their care and attention and not once did I think ‘exactly what difference would 1 sodding day make’ (obviously I did not think the word ‘sodding’ but I’m aware that some of you may be sensitive to stronger language). So, subject to a CT scan on Tuesday (and my low white blood cell count following last Tuesday’s blood test), I will be meeting Mr Haq (he of the firm handshake) and his scalpel on Thursday. I rather hope that I will be able to provide another update post op.
